Who I am, what I build, and why I write any of this down.
I am Dawit Abate Woldeamanuel. I build software, mostly the kind that has to keep running after the people who wrote it have moved on.
Since 2014 that has been enterprise work: architectures in finance and insurance, high-traffic platforms, the application layer with both feet planted in the infrastructure underneath. It is unglamorous work and it taught me the thing I keep writing about — that the interesting decisions are almost never about the framework.
What I build#
I am building Flui, an open-source platform for deploying applications on European cloud providers. A vendor-neutral manifest, a curated app catalog, no lock-in. Around it sit smaller pieces: vOps, a control plane for plain VPS servers, and dymmi, which turns a question in ordinary language into a query against your own database without the model ever seeing a row of it.
The common thread is ownership. Not ideology about it — the practical version: being able to move, being able to read what runs, being able to leave.
Why I write#
Because building something makes you learn things that do not fit in a commit message, and because most of what I needed to read while building did not exist.
The pieces here are long. They are published when they are finished rather than on a schedule, and they get corrected in public when I get something wrong — every substantial change is dated at the bottom of the piece.
There are no comments on this site. That is not distance: if you want to argue with something I wrote, write to me or take it to wherever it is being discussed. I read everything.
Working together#
I help companies build and run their own cloud platform, on their own servers or on the supported providers: architecture, networking and security, deployments from their repositories, observability and backups from day one. And, for those leaving the big clouds, moving the workloads that make sense to move, at the pace they need.
I do it with Flui, and every engagement ends with the team able to run the platform on its own, if it wants to. The details are at flui.cloud/services; to talk about it, dawit@flui.cloud.
